STEP ONE: GETTING TO EUROPE—TRANSCONTINENTAL FLIGHTS
The first step in getting to the trailhead is getting to Europe. There are two ways to go about this: the easy way and the cheap way.
Flying to the airport that’s closest to the trail is the easy way. You can usually find out which airport this is with an Internet search for “closest airport to (insert the name of the town you’re starting your walk in).” There are many airports in Europe, so there might be two or three with equally advantageous locations; choose one based on price or the convenience of flight schedules from your home airport. For the best pricing information, I recommend using a European flight aggregator like Skyscanner or momondo (see Resources), which pull fares from major carriers and budget carriers alike, because most US flight aggregators don’t have access to budget carrier rates. If you find a flight you like, you’re set; you can skip ahead to Step Three, Getting to the Trailhead, later in this chapter.
Flying to one of the major hubs in Europe and using regional transportation to get to the trailhead is the cheap way. This can save you a lot of money—sometimes even hundreds or thousands of euros—if you’re on a budget and have a little time and patience. The reason? Mile for mile, regional transportation (budget airlines, trains, buses and rental cars) is often vastly more affordable than an extended multi-stop transcontinental flight.
Also, it’s a lot easier to find screaming deals to these hubs than to smaller airports in Europe. Check out the Top Ten Air Hubs in Europe sidebar to choose a hub. A simple way to price your options from your home airport to one of these hubs is to search on Skyscanner for flights from your home airport to “Everywhere” (yep, this is a legitimate search term) and browse through the results for the best European deals.
If you’re walking a long trail, depending on how far you’re planning on walking, you may want to consider flying out of a different airport to get back home than the one you flew into to get to Europe.
